Royal Society Publishing is a photography contest that celebrates the beauty of science. The 2019 winners have been announced, and they show us natural and scientific phenomena that are astounding, but also truly beautiful and photogenic. Now in its fifth year, the contest chooses winners and runner-ups in five categories: Ecology and Environmental ScienceEarth Science and ClimatologyBehaviorAstronomyMicro-Imaging There’s also the overall winner and this year’s award went to Dr. Aleks Labuda, whose photo was also the category winner in Micro-Imaging....

A woman from Tacoma, Washington recently ended up in hospital after posing with a live octopus on her face. Reportedly, she thought that the photo will help her win a local photo competition. But instead, the venomous animal bit her on the face and sent her to the emergency room. Jamie Bisceglia was at the fishing derby in the Tacoma Narrows when she met up with fishermen who had hooked an octopus....

As we’re only days away from CES 2017, YI – who named themselves GoPro killers – has announced their plans for the a New action camera. It seems their YI 4K Action Camera (which we reviewed here) is about to get the update. This January in Las Vegas, YI is about to present their new 4K+ Action Camera, which will allow you shooting 4K videos at 60 fps. Yongnuo has officially announced their first RF mount lens. It’s the YN RF 85mm f/1.8R DF DSM and it’s actually equipped with a configurable control ring. Despite a number of other lens manufacturers producing RF mount compatible lenses, this marks the first 3rd party lens to actually include a control ring, which has so far been found exclusively on Canon’s own RF lenses. A few reviews for the lens have already been popping up online over the last week or so, but the lens hadn’t officially been announced yet....

In writing and filmmaking, there’s a term called “killing your darlings“. In Journalism, it’s the slightly more macabre “killing your babies“, but the end result is the same. It’s trimming the fat from the content in order to make it efficient and bring it to the point. For a writer, it means cutting out unnecessary large passages because they distract from the story. For a filmmaker or editor, time and budget constraints might mean cutting out scenes you love just because they don’t add to the story....

Starting in April 2019, people who take photos under someone’s clothing without their consent could end up in jail for up to two years. It took 18 months to make upskirting a criminal offense. A recent study shows that three out of four stock images show babies sleeping in unsafe environments. The study was carried out by Baby Center and analysed hundreds of images available on stock photography sites such as Getty Images, iStock, and Shutterstock. Each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (also called SIDS or cot death) in the United States, with strangulation and suffocation in bed among the top reported causes, says Baby Center....

A widower in the UK is appealing to help find the stranger who shot the last photo of him and his wife together before she died. BBC News reports that Alan Write and his wife visited Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Cranbrook, Kent, England in September 2015. During the visit a man they spoke to took their photograph in the gardens. Three months later, Mrs write passed away. Alan told National Trust magazine that this would have been the last photograph ever taken of her....
