Canon is going wild with the patents lately, but there isn’t much as wild as this. Northlight Images spotted another Canon patent recently, for a somewhat insane Canon 50-80mm f/1.1 RF mount lens. This would not only be the widest aperture zoom lens Canon’s ever made but probably the widest aperture zoom lens anybody’s ever made. US patent #20190243111 shows how Canon is taking advantage of its large RF mount diameter to maximise aperture with the new zoom lens, offering many of the popular focal lengths favoured by portrait shooters....

Aside from their long-awaited mirrorless camera, Canon has launched two new DSLRs: EOS Rebel T7 (EOS 2000D) and EOS 4000D. Both cameras are very affordable, so their primary goal could be making newbies join team Canon. Canon EOS Rebel T7 will be sold for $550 with a kit lens, whereas Canon EOS 4000D (body only) will set you back for only about $380. So, if you’re in search of your first DSLR, I guess Canon had you in mind....

Canon has received a lot of criticism over the Canon EOS R5‘s overheating issues, especially since it started to look as if the limitations were arbitrarily imposed by Canon and not based on actual temperatures. Well, now they seem to be addressing some of those issues with a new V1.1 firmware update. Now, this certainly isn’t going to make everybody happy, as the benefits seem relatively minor, but it is at least an improvement....

Capture One has released a powerful update to Capture One 22. The improved version features a re-envisioned keystone tool, an array of feature updates with expanded capabilities, and Apple silicon performance advancement that brings a host of substantial speed improvements. This update also brings new camera and lens support for a number of the most recent hardware releases. What’s new? Keystone Tool redesign: According to the press release, the Keystone Tool has been redesigned with new functionality and a new user interface....

You might remember Chroma from a couple of years ago when they launched the Chroma 4×5 large format camera through Kickstarter. It’s since grown into a family that includes a 4×5 handheld camera and now the new 679 modular medium format camera. It’s designed to allow photographers to shoot medium format film using a camera tailored to their own needs. Although it’s a completely new design, the Chroma 679 inherits a number of features from its large-format siblings, including a removable lens board and a pinhole lens board....

After an increase in camera and lens production in 2017, early stats for 2018 show a massive drop. Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) has just issued a report which shows that total camera shipment worldwide has dropped by around 28%. The report covers January and February 2018, as well as stats for the entire 2016 and 2017. And for now, the results aren’t promising. The overall sales in 2016 were the lowest ever, yet they were better than sales in 2018....

Bitbanger Labs, makers of the popular Pixelstick light painting tool are at it again. This time it’s a module LED strip which bears more than a striking resemblance to the Spekular lighting system released just last month. But, it has a few rather significant differences. Foremost amongst them being multiple colour options, as well as remote control straight from your phone. The project is being launched through Kickstarter, and it’s already over halfway towards its goal....

Just a few days ago, Brazilian photographer Marcio Cabral was disqualified from the 2017 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition when it was found out that he placed a stuffed animal in his winning image. The scandal has since gained a lot of attention that even Conan O’ Brien discussed it on his late night show. Called The Night Raider, Cabral’s photo shows an anteater feeding on a glowing termite mound in a Brazilian nature park....

Urbex photographer Isaac Wright AKA DrifterShoots was caught and arrested for breaking and entering felonies across several states. Now he’s grounded and is selling his series Where My Vans Go as NFTs, becoming one of the highest valued photographers in the crypto art world. Wright’s urban exploring began 3 years ago after leaving the military. A former paratrooper and highly trained, he served several tours including Afghanistan and the Middle East....

This one’s been anticipated for a while now, with lots of hushed talk and whispers whenever its name was mentioned. But it’s finally official. Cosina has now announced the new super-bright aperture Voigtlander NOKTON 60mm f/0.95mm lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. On the Micro Four Thirds cameras for which it is intended, it offers a field of view equivalent to that of 120mm focal length on a full-frame body....

I absolutely love food photography and I am finding myself doing more and more of it lately, working with small businesses particularly bakeries (maybe it’s my name?!). One of the main perks of working smaller scale is that you are normally shooting real food and keeping it all as natural as possible so that at the end of the shoot I am being given boxes of cookies and brownies to take home....

You can create this washed out, dreamy look in a few seconds, you only need a few simple adjustments in Photoshop. I tried it out on some of my images, too. I didn’t really expect to like it, but I was surprised by the result. It kinda grew on me. As a matter of fact, I even made a Lightroom preset....

Timelapses are a lot of fun to make, but they can sometimes be a bit of a hassle to assemble in post. Turning speech into text has become so common that i’s a part of almost every smartphone. But have you ever thought about turning your speech into a portrait? Researchers have, and they’ve even made it possible. Artificial intelligence scientists at MIT’S Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have created AI that turns short snippets of audio speech recording into a human face. As if this weren’t both stunning and creepy enough, the results are actually fairly accurate, too!...

Announced this morning, there is no doubt or question that the new Sony A7C is Sony’s smallest full-frame camera, but in the promotional material for the camera – which you can see above, Sony is claiming that it’s “the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame camera”. Well, it’s not. Even if we narrow the field down to “interchangeable lens full-frame camera”, it’s still not the smallest. Nor is it the lightest....

The idea of this camera started with vintage Profile Spotlight, that I wanted to restore, but found out, that some of internal lens elements were shattered. The only lens element, that was undamaged was the front element of it. Upon some closer inspection I discovered, that this element can project image circle big enough, to cover 8X10 area. The obvious use of it was to create large format camera. but I didn’t want to bother with large format film and other hassles of creating proper large format camera, just for this weekend experiment....

DJI have updated their Osmo handheld gimbal camera to provide up to 7x zoom capabilities. Like the recently announced Zenmuse Z3 zoom camera for the Inspire 1, it’s actually a 3.5x optical zoom. On top of this is a 2x “digital lossless zoom”. Technically the “digital zoom” is really a crop mode, and is only available when shooting 1080p. You get a field of view equivalent to a 22-77mm focal range on a full frame camera....

No matter if you’re a hobbyist or you’re paid for your photography, I’m sure you’ve come across all sorts of unpleasant situations. In this video, Daniel Norton reflects on some of the situations that we’ve all been through. Snobbism and vanity are something we’ve all encountered. To be honest, we may even be vain or snobbish to some extent, and maybe we’ve done some of the things he mentions.
