Phase One have today introduced a new variant of their IQ3 100MP digital back. The IQ3 100MP Trichromatic. Featuring a new Bayer filter CMOS sensor design, developed in partnership with Sony, the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic attempts to replicate how the human eye sees colour. The technology, Phase One say, promises that the Trichromatic back will bring “unsurpassed colour quality to the hands of the finest photographers across the globe”. A pretty bold claim to make, but knowing Phase One, they wouldn’t make it if they didn’t feel they could back it up....

Phhhoto, a photo app that was shut down in 2017, is suing Facebook (now Meta), claiming that they forced it out of business. The lawsuit claims that Facebook faked having an interest in collaboration only to copy Phhhoto’s main feature and eventually drive it out of business. The app was launched in 2014 for both Android and iOS. It allegedly had nearly 4 million active monthly users and even celebrities like Beyoncé, Joe Jonas, Chrissy Teigen, and Bella Hadid genuinely used it and cross-posted their Phhhoto content to Instagram....

We’ve seen some incredible examples of bird photography, video, and even weirdly beautiful audio. But photographer Jocelyn Anderson takes filming birds on a more personal level. Her little models eat out of her hand, and I mean it quite literally. As she feeds them, she films them in a series of incredibly soothing and heartwarming slow-motion videos. “I often visit a park that has birds that have been hand-fed for years,” Jocelyn explains....

Collaborations are hard, and the difficulty bar gets higher the more people involved. However, pulling a big collaborative effort done well, can produce massive results. Photographer Rob Woodcox (see his story here) collaborated with over 20 friends and three top creatives to cope up with the skeleton queene story. Traveling for thousands of miles without money, paying for food and accommodation with nothing but your photography. It sounds like a great adventure, but also like a scary task full of challenges. Australian photographer Edwina Robertson did it. She recently finished her 3-month trip around the most rural and regional areas of Australia. She dove for 27,000 kilometers (17,000 miles), trading her photography for food and accommodation. Her dog Jordie was her only companion, and she shared with us some photos and details of this amazing journey....

Alexander Khokhlov and Veronica Ershova, have already shown us what they can do when photographing people as a team. But this time, their main subjects were dogs. The duo’s latest project The Dog Show is all about man’s best friend. Alexander and Veronica have created portraits of dogs showing their different personalities and emotions, and they’ll put a smile on your face even if you’re not much of a dog person....

You probably already know about some free (or almost free) Photoshop alternatives. Photopea is an online-based Photoshop clone which works in your web browser. It’s accessible to anyone, contains plenty of advanced features – and it’s completely free. Programmer Ivan Kutskir from the Czech Republic is the man behind Photopea. DJI’s Mavic Mini made big news when it was announced in October, especially given that it was something so small. But being small and lightweight is exactly the point of the Mavic mini, weighing in at a mere 249g – 1g below the minimum limit required by many of the world’s governments before the operator requires licensing and regulation. It looks like the DJI Mavic Mini might have something of a design flaw, though....

Can you imagine embezzling over $400,000 of state money to buy camera gear so you can take photos for Instagram? As crazy as it sounds, this actually happened. A University of California professor reportedly spent $404,000 of state funds to buy himself cameras and lenses. No, he didn’t need them for science or teaching – he reportedly bought them to shoot photos for his Instagram and to sell prints on his website....

Qualcomm has posted a video showing what they say is “Professional-quality” 8K HDR footage from the Xiaomi 12 smartphone. It’s the world’s first phone that offers 8K HDR video capture and features the new flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. It all sounds very impressive until you actually look at the footage to see that, honestly, it kinda just looks like somebody took 1080p footage and scaled it up. In fairness, all tech has to start somewhere and this is the first smartphone to incorporate 10-bit 8K HDR using Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor – although it’s not the only device out there using this chip – so it’s going to take a little work....

you know how funny the f-stop scale is. All those weird numbers that make no sense.. (well, they do make sense if you look at the square roots of powers of two, but this is really not making anybody’s lives easier). Griffin Hammond came up with a clever trick to remember the entire scale of F-Stops using only two numbers: 1 and 1.4. The secret to the method is making a series of numbers that starts with those two numbers and then the next member is the prev-prev number times two....

Yesterday, we wrote about OG App, an Instagram clone that doesn’t look like a commercial break in the middle of your favorite TV show. But only a day after its release, the app was kicked out of the Apple store. Instagram’s parent company, Meta, claims that it has taken “enforcement actions” against OG App. What’s more, one of the OG App’s founders claims that the personal Instagram and Facebook profiles of his team have been permanently banned....

This is an odd and unexpected bit of potential news. I say potential because at the moment it’s mostly a rumour. But it’s quite an interesting thought. Nikon has been struggling, there’s no two ways about it. In Nikon’s own financial report they cite an “extraordinary loss” of around 53 billion yen (~$485 million). This resulted in 1,000 job cuts and completely dropping the newly planned line of DL cameras....

XP-Pen has just launched its new tablet, the Deco mini7W. It’s a small but powerful table and the fact that it connects wirelessly to the computer makes this tablet much easier to use and much more versatile. I just had to test it, and when XP-Pen sent me this one to test, I was completely delighted with it. I’ve been editing my images with a pen for a long time....

Rode has released two updates for the Rode Wireless Go II microphones, bringing new podcasting and live streaming functionality and allowing complete remote configuration from your smartphone. The latest software update brings the Rode Central app to iOS and Android, no longer locking you into a desktop or laptop for configuration. Rode Connect is a podcasting app allowing you to connect up to four Rode NT-USB Mini and Rode Wireless GO II microphones, allowing you to live mix your audio in real-time when hosting a live stream or podcast with multiple users simultaneously....

Well, this is a bit of a surprise if true. Panasonic has long shunned other autofocus systems in favour of its proprietary “Depth from defocus” system used in its Micro Four Thirds cameras. And while Panasonic might be happy with it, many Panasonic users are not. But now it seems like Panasonic might actually be changing their tune if the above video is to be believed. It was posted by Film Studi-O-taku Hi, based in Japan who says that the “magical camera company fairies” (which could mean he’s protecting his source or it could be completely made up) got word to him that the GH6 will include standard phase-detect autofocus....
